A rapidly spreading wildfire, designated the Hughes Fire, ignited late Wednesday morning near Castaic Lake in Los Angeles County. By 5 p.m., the blaze had consumed approximately 9,400 acres, prompting mandatory evacuation orders for over 31,000 residents, with an additional 23,000 under evacuation warnings.
The fire's swift expansion is attributed to strong winds and critically dry vegetation. Firefighters from multiple agencies, including CAL FIRE, the Los Angeles County Fire Department, and the U.S. Forest Service, are collaborating to contain the inferno. A red-flag warning remains in effect until Friday morning due to anticipated wind fluctuations and critical fire conditions.
Interstate 5 experienced temporary closures because of dense smoke, complicating evacuation efforts. Despite the fire's intensity, no fatalities or structural damages have been reported thus far. Authorities are also preparing for potential rainfall over the weekend, which could lead to mudslides in areas previously affected by wildfires.
The cause of the Hughes Fire is currently under investigation. Residents are urged to stay informed through official channels for updates on evacuation orders and safety guidelines.
