In a thrilling five-set match at the Australian Open, Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego defeated 18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca, who had previously upset sixth seed Andrey Rublev. The match lasted 3 hours and 37 minutes, with Sonego securing a 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 victory.
Fonseca, buoyed by a strong Brazilian fan presence, began with a win in the first set tiebreak. However, Sonego's tactical play and experience allowed him to dominate the subsequent sets, effectively neutralizing Fonseca's baseline game. Despite a spirited comeback attempt by Fonseca in the fourth set, Sonego maintained his composure to clinch the match in the fifth set.
This victory marks Sonego's second appearance in the Australian Open third round, where he is set to face Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, who also advanced after a five-set match against American Frances Tiafoe.
