The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has introduced spiked turnstiles at the 59th Street/Lexington Avenue subway station, serving the N, R, W, 4, 5, and 6 lines, in an effort to combat fare evasion. These spikes are designed to prevent individuals from hoisting themselves over the turnstiles by using the handrails. Despite this initiative, many commuters question its effectiveness, noting that fare evaders often employ various methods to bypass payment. Regular subway rider Veronica Pisani criticized the spikes as impractical and unlikely to deter determined fare evaders. Another commuter, Kristen, expressed concerns about the design, suggesting it may convey a sense of exclusion. Fare evasion has been a significant issue for the MTA, resulting in an estimated loss of $690 million in 2022. Previous attempts to address this problem have met with limited success. The MTA has not disclosed the cost of installing the new spikes or whether there are plans to expand their use to other stations.
